Ballistics Division undertakes examination of various Small Arms and Ammunitions involved in criminal cases for identification and to establish the link between the Crime and the Criminal. The challenges in the Forensic Ballistics examination, among others, are:

* Establishing the identity of firearm (including countrymade firearm) used in the commission of offence.
* Identification of type of firearm used through fired bullets and cartridge cases found at the Crime Scene or extricated from body of the deceased/victim.
* Estimation of Muzzle-Target Distance / Direction of firing from the effects of gunshot on the target.
* Possibility of ricochet of bullet.
* Shooter identification.
